People keep blogs for many different reasons. Some people like to blog regularly as a hobby, while others use it to advertise their business and add content to their website. Others still threat their blog as their business, which means they monetize their content and earn money when they write new posts.
Having a blog that makes money is an attractive concept, especially for those of us who enjoy writing anyway. And yet, it often takes a lot of work. Yes, content is still king when it comes to blogging, but you still need to know how to properly monetize your blogs if you want to truly be successful. After all, there are millions of websites and millions of blogs that cover every niche imaginable, so you need to be able to stand out and make some money while holding your readers’ interest. With that being said, here are some things that you can do to monetize your own blog.

Monetizing a blog is essentially running your own online business. That can be daunting for even the most experienced entrepreneur, but it will be especially stressful for a novice who simply wants to make some money with their passion for writing. As we said before, there is a lot to remember when it comes to monetizing any website, but most of it boils down to getting traffic to your blog and advertising what you have to offer. Right now, the best way to attract traffic to your blog is by sharing your posts on social media through Tailwind, Pinterest, Facebook, and any other platforms you like to use. You can also optimize your blog posts for SEO if you want your posts to show up on search engine results, but that isn’t as important anymore as simply having great content.
Once you have enough traffic going to your blog, you can begin monetizing it by advertising your own affiliate products or other products such as ebooks or online courses. You can also create sponsored content that could pertain to your niche and your readers’ interests.
Making Money through Affiliate Marketing
Affiliate marketing is defined by Google as an arrangement that a retailer makes with a blog to provide commission in exchange for referrals or traffic to the retailer’s site. It allows you to make money by advertising a product that you don’t have to go through the time and effort to create yourself. It’s also a form of passive income in that all you need to do is place the affiliate links in the appropriate places on your blog. The links go to the retailer’s site, and you make a small amount of commission whenever a sale is made.
Affiliate marketing is a great monetization pillar for any blog, but it does have some downsides. First of all, the commissions are relatively low. You don’t have to do much at all to earn them, but you can’t expect to live off of them. Second of all, you’re pretty much at the mercy of the affiliate marketing programs that you use. Retailers like Amazon have their own affiliate marketing programs, and you have to follow their rules for good or ill when you sign up for them.
Marketing Your Own Online Information Products
If you have skills or products of your own that you can market on your blog, don’t hesitate to do so. Online information products such as eBooks, online courses, and membership sites can be a great source of income for those who have them to offer, and they are no longer as cost-prohibitive to create them. EBooks can be self-published very easily, and online courses often only require you to have a means of recording and posting video. It may not be simple enough for anybody to do easily, but there are people out there who will gladly pay for these products, provided you have enough expertise in a certain topic to make it worth their while.
Making Money with Ads
While you should always be focusing on the content of your blog, you can also make money with the tried-and-true method of posting ads on your website. These are images and banners that will run alongside your blog, usually in a way that stands out without being too intrusive to your own content. When a user clicks on one of the ads, they will be taken to an external site, and you make a little bit of money after a certain number of clicks. It is passive income, so you can’t expect to make too much money unless your blog has a lot of traffic. Still, services such as Google Adsense make it incredibly easy to run ads on your blog, and you can match the ads to fit your blog’s niche and your readers’ interest.
Sponsored Content
Finally, you can always monetize your blog by writing sponsored posts for other businesses and publish them on your own blog. It’s similar to affiliate marketing in that you’re basically advertising another product on your blog, but instead of only getting paid if a sale is made, you’re paid upfront for the post itself. You do need to make sure that your sponsored post is for a company that will appeal to your readers, and you obviously cannot do this so often that you neglect your own content, but it is still a great way to make some extra money with your blog.
Whether you’re using it to improve your business’s sales or you just want to keep it as a hobby and a source of additional income, you can make at least a little extra money with your blog with these monetization strategies. You do still need to remember that this will still be done with your own blog, so don’t neglect your own writing in favor of advertising and sponsored content. Keep writing your own content as you advertise other brands, and people will seek you out. The more traffic you get to your blog, the more income it can generate.
